Take a private 2-day desert tour from Marrakech to Zagora, traveling through the High Atlas Mountains, Ait Ben Haddou and the Draa Valley before spending a night at a desert camp.
The trip includes a camel ride, a traditional Moroccan dinner and overnight accommodation in a desert tent. On the second day, you’ll visit the Ouarzazate area before returning to Marrakech.
Zagora is a practical option for travelers who have only two days available for a desert excursion. The landscape is mainly rocky, with smaller sand dunes rather than the towering dunes found in Merzouga. Expect approximately 6–7 hours of driving each way, plus sightseeing and meal stops.

Meals included: Breakfast.
The tour offers two accommodation categories in the Zagora area.
Standard Desert Camp
Traditional private tents with shared bathroom facilities. Dinner and breakfast are included.
Luxury Desert Camp
Larger tents with proper beds and private en-suite bathrooms. Dinner and breakfast are included.
The available camp, tent category and any upgrade charges should be confirmed before booking. If you require a private bathroom, request the luxury option when asking for a quote.
Long driving days: The route between Marrakech and Zagora takes approximately 6–7 hours each way without sightseeing stops. Allow additional time for visiting Ait Ben Haddou, meals and rest breaks.
Desert landscape: Zagora has small sand dunes and extensive rocky terrain. This tour does not visit the high dunes of Erg Chebbi in Merzouga or Erg Chigaga.
Weather: Desert days can be hot, while nights may be cold, especially in winter. Bring layers suitable for your travel dates.
Luggage: A small overnight bag is usually more convenient for a one-night desert stay. Ask your Marrakech hotel or riad whether it can securely store your larger luggage.
Camel rides: Camel riding is optional. Inform the organizer before departure if you prefer a vehicle transfer to the camp.
Return flights: Because the tour typically returns to Marrakech in the evening, avoid scheduling a flight immediately after the excursion.

Zagora is a “stone desert” (reg), offering a more flat and rocky landscape compared to the towering sand dunes of Merzouga. While the dunes here are smaller, Zagora offers a fantastic “desert atmosphere” and a stunning sunset/sunrise experience for those who cannot spare 3 or 4 days to reach the deep Sahara.
Yes! Zagora is the closest desert to Marrakech (about 6–7 hours away). This 2-day trip is the perfect solution for travelers who want to ride a camel, sleep in a Berber tent, and cross the Atlas Mountains but are on a very tight schedule.
No. To see the massive 150-meter sand dunes, you would need at least 3 days to reach Merzouga. The Zagora tour provides a traditional desert camp experience and a sunset camel ride, but the terrain is primarily rocky desert with smaller sand hills.
The drive is approximately 6 to 7 hours each way. However, the journey is one of the most beautiful in Morocco. We cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass and stop at the famous Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah to break up the drive and explore.
We typically leave the Zagora camp after breakfast and arrive back in Marrakech between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM, depending on traffic in the mountains.
Not at all. The trek usually lasts about 1 hour—just long enough to enjoy the sunset over the desert floor. If you prefer not to ride, our 4×4 can take you directly to the camp.
We offer both Standard and Luxury camp options in Zagora.
Standard. Private traditional tents with shared bathroom facilities.
Luxury. Larger tents with “real” beds and private en-suite bathrooms. Both options include a traditional Moroccan dinner with live Berber drum music around a campfire.
Even though it’s a short trip, you will see some of Morocco’s top sites:
The High Atlas Mountains. Crossing the 2,260m Tizi n’Tichka pass.
Ait Ben Haddou. The UNESCO-listed ancient fortress (as seen in Game of Thrones).
Ouarzazate. Known as “The Gate of the Desert” and home to major film studios.
Draa Valley. Thousands of palm trees stretching along the river—one of Morocco’s most lush oases.
