After an early breakfast, you will meet your private driver to begin your 2-day Saharan odyssey. The drive to Merzouga is one of Morocco’s most scenic transitions, covering approximately 470 km (7 hours). While it is a long day on the road, the “abrupt variations” in the landscape make every mile captivating.
The Moroccan Switzerland
Our first stop is Ifrane, a city famous for its alpine architecture, pristine lakes, and nearby ski resorts. Often called the “Switzerland of Morocco,” it offers a startling contrast to the medieval streets of Fes with its tidy parks and European-style chalets.
The Ancient Cedars of Azrou
We continue into the lush Middle Atlas to the Cedar Forest of Azrou, home to the majestic 800-year-old Cèdre Gouraud. Here, you will come “face-to-face” with the local Barbary Macaques. These playful wild monkeys are a highlight for many travelers and are famously friendly when greeted with treats.

We depart the desert, heading north via the traditional town of Rissani. Our route takes us through the dramatic Ziz Gorges, where the landscape is characterized by striking volcanic rock formations. We then cross the Tizi N’Talghamt Pass (the “She-Camel Pass”), enjoying panoramic views as we descend into Midelt.
Berber Hospitality
Enjoy a lunch break in Midelt, perhaps sampling local mountain specialties and traditional mint tea. We continue our scenic drive through the heart of the Atlas Mountains, passing through various Amazigh (Berber) villages that offer a glimpse into the authentic highland way of life.
Final Forest Stop & Return
We make a final stop in the Cedar Forest for a last encounter with the Barbary apes before a brief visit to Ifrane for photos or a refreshing drink. Yes, it is the shortest possible way to see the “real” dunes of Erg Chebbi. While it involves a lot of driving (about 7–8 hours each way), we break up the journey with stops in Ifrane, the Cedar Forest of Azrou, and the Ziz Valley. It is perfect for travelers with a tight schedule who don’t want to miss the Sahara experience.
We usually leave the desert camp after breakfast around 9:00 AM. After stops for lunch and photos along the way, you can expect to arrive back at your Riad in Fes between 6:30 PM and 7:30 PM.
This specific 2-day package returns to Fes. However, driving from Merzouga to Marrakech takes about 9–10 hours. You don’t need to carry your heavy luggage into the dunes! Your main suitcases will stay safely in the locked 4×4 vehicle or at our secure base hotel at the edge of the desert. You only need to pack a small backpack with essentials (camera, toothbrush, warm layers) for your night in the camp.
Our Luxury Camps have electricity in the tents for charging phones and cameras. Wi-Fi is generally not available in the dunes—we encourage you to unplug and enjoy the stars! Cell service (4G) is usually quite good at the camp if you have a local SIM card.
No problem at all. If you prefer not to ride a camel, we can arrange a 4×4 transfer to take you from the edge of the dunes to the desert camp at no extra cost. You can still enjoy the sunset and the camp atmosphere without the ride.
In the winter (November to February), temperatures can drop to 0°C (32°F) or lower. Our luxury tents are equipped with heavy, warm blankets, but we recommend bringing warm pajamas and a jacket. In the summer, the desert stays warm, and the tents are designed to be well-ventilated.
Standard Camp. Bathrooms are shared and located in a separate facility near the tents.
Almost always! The Barbary Macaques near Azrou are very active. We always stop here so you can see them and take photos. We recommend observing them respectfully without feeding them processed snacks.
