Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Ait Ben Haddou – Zagora Desert

The High Atlas Crossing

Your adventure begins with a spectacular drive through the High Atlas Mountains. We wind through the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260m), where you can marvel at the ancient Berber villages clinging to the mountainsides—a living window into centuries-old traditions.

Ait Ben Haddou (UNESCO World Heritage)

Around midday, we arrive at the legendary fortified village of Ait Ben Haddou. You’ll have time to walk the historic streets of this “Hollywood of Morocco,” famous as the filming location for Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia.

The Draa Valley Route

Leaving the mountains behind, we cross the Anti-Atlas range and descend into the lush Draa Valley. This is one of Morocco’s most beautiful landscapes, where millions of palm trees and ancient Kasbahs line the riverbanks for miles.

Sunset Camel Trek

Upon arriving in Zagora, your private camel caravan awaits. Trek into the dunes as the sun sets over the desert horizon—a moment of pure peace and incredible photo opportunities.

A Night Under the Stars

Arrive at your desert camp for a warm Berber welcome. Enjoy a traditional Moroccan dinner followed by live drum music around the campfire. Whether you choose to sleep in your private nomad tent or gaze at the stars from the open desert, it is a night you will never forget.

Day 2: Zagora Desert – Draa Valley – Taourirt Kasbah – Marrakech

A Desert Sunrise

Rise early to witness a breathtaking sunrise over the Zagora dunes—a quiet, magical moment as the desert changes colors. After a traditional breakfast at the camp, you will enjoy a final morning camel trek (or a short 4×4 drive) back to meet your private vehicle.

The Draa Valley & Agdz

We begin our journey back toward Marrakech, following the winding path of the Draa Valley. We’ll pass through Agdz, a beautiful village known for its dense palm groves and the ancient Kasbah Tamnougalt, which once guarded the old caravan routes.

Taourirt Kasbah (Ouarzazate)

Upon reaching Ouarzazate, we stop to explore the Taourirt Kasbah. Once the residence of the Glaoui family, this historic architectural masterpiece is a maze of decorated rooms and towers that showcase Morocco’s impressive cultural and defensive history.

The High Atlas Return

Our journey continues back over the High Atlas Mountains. We’ll make a stop for lunch at a local restaurant with panoramic mountain views and take advantage of any last-minute photo opportunities at the Tizi n’Tichka pass.

Arrival in Marrakech

We expect to arrive back in the city by late afternoon. Your private driver will drop you off directly at your resort or Riad, leaving you with unforgettable memories of your Sahara escape and plenty of time for a relaxing dinner.

Packing for the Desert: The Resort Guest Guide

Stay comfortable as you transition from poolside luxury to the golden dunes.

Since you are only away for one night, we recommend leaving your main luggage at your resort’s secure storage and bringing a small overnight bag for the trip.

1. Wear clothing in layers

The desert temperature shifts quickly. Be prepared for warm days and cool nights.

  • Daytime. Lightweight, breathable clothing (linen or cotton).
  • Evening: A warm jacket or fleece. Even in summer, the desert air cools down significantly after sunset.
  • Footwear. Comfortable sneakers or closed-toe walking shoes for the Kasbah tours, and a pair of sandals for the camp.
  • Modesty. While resorts are relaxed, we recommend covering shoulders and knees when visiting the rural Berber villages and Kasbahs.

2. Sun & Desert Protection

The Moroccan sun is powerful, especially during the drive and the camel trek.

  • A Scarf (Shesh). Our guides can show you how to wrap a traditional Berber scarf to protect your face from sun and wind.
  • Sunglasses & Wide-Brimmed Hat.
  • High-SPF Sunscreen & Lip Balm.

3. Tech & Essentials

  • Power Bank. While our luxury camps have charging points, a portable charger is great for long days in the car.
  • Camera/Phone. You will want plenty of battery for the Draa Valley and the sunset trek!
  • Personal Toiletries: Small travel-sized soap, toothbrush, and wet wipes (very handy in the desert).
  • Small Cash (Dirhams). For lunch stops, local tips, or small souvenirs in the villages.

Pro Tip for Guests: most resorts in Marrakech are happy to store your large suitcases for free while you are on a 2-day excursion. Just let the concierge know you’ll be back the following evening!

2-Day Marrakech to Zagora Desert Tour - Frequently Asked Questions

Zagora is a “stone desert” (reg), offering a more flat and rocky landscape compared to the towering sand dunes of Merzouga. While the dunes here are smaller, Zagora offers a fantastic “desert atmosphere” and a stunning sunset/sunrise experience for those who cannot spare 3 or 4 days to reach the deep Sahara.

Yes! Zagora is the closest desert to Marrakech (about 6–7 hours away). This 2-day trip is the perfect solution for travelers who want to ride a camel, sleep in a Berber tent, and cross the Atlas Mountains but are on a very tight schedule.

No. To see the massive 150-meter sand dunes, you would need at least 3 days to reach Merzouga. The Zagora tour provides a traditional desert camp experience and a sunset camel ride, but the terrain is primarily rocky desert with smaller sand hills.

The drive is approximately 6 to 7 hours each way. However, the journey is one of the most beautiful in Morocco. We cross the Tizi n’Tichka pass and stop at the famous Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah to break up the drive and explore.

We typically leave the Zagora camp after breakfast and arrive back in Marrakech between 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM, depending on traffic in the mountains.

Not at all. The trek usually lasts about 1 hour—just long enough to enjoy the sunset over the desert floor. If you prefer not to ride, our 4×4 can take you directly to the camp.

We offer both Standard and Luxury camp options in Zagora.

  • Standard. Private traditional tents with shared bathroom facilities.

  • Luxury. Larger tents with “real” beds and private en-suite bathrooms. Both options include a traditional Moroccan dinner with live Berber drum music around a campfire.

Even though it’s a short trip, you will see some of Morocco’s top sites:

  • The High Atlas Mountains. Crossing the 2,260m Tizi n’Tichka pass.

  • Ait Ben Haddou. The UNESCO-listed ancient fortress (as seen in Game of Thrones).

  • Ouarzazate. Known as “The Gate of the Desert” and home to major film studios.

  • Draa Valley. Thousands of palm trees stretching along the river—one of Morocco’s most lush oases.
