In the afternoon, we take a short scenic drive along the coast to Rabat, the political heart of Morocco. We explore the Hassan Tower, a 12th-century unfinished masterpiece, and the adjacent Mausoleum of Mohammed V, a triumph of modern Alaouite architecture.

The Blue Kasbah

We conclude the day at the Kasbah of the Udayas, a fortified citadel overlooking the Atlantic. Wander through its quiet, blue-and-white residential streets and enjoy a mint tea at the legendary Café Maure, overlooking the Bou Regreg River.

Day 2: Rabat – The Blue Pearl of Chefchaouen

After a fresh Riad breakfast, we leave the coast and head north toward the rugged Rif Mountains. The landscape shifts from coastal plains to dramatic peaks as we approach the world-famous “Blue Pearl.”

Chefchaouen Discovery

Arrive in Chefchaouen, a city that feels like a waking dream. Every wall, door, and staircase is painted in varying shades of indigo and azure. Your afternoon is free to “get lost” in its tranquil Medina.

Local Life

Visit Outa el-Hamma Square, the heart of the town, where you can watch the world go by from a rooftop café, or walk up to the Spanish Mosque at sunset for a breathtaking panoramic view of the blue city glowing against the mountain backdrop.

Day 3: Chefchaouen – Volubilis – Meknes – Fes

Ancient Roman Echoes

Leaving the blue hills behind, we travel south to Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Wander through the remains of this once-thriving Roman outpost, where the Capitoline Temple and Triumphal Arch stand amidst remarkably preserved mosaics that still glow with color 2,000 years later.

The Gates of Meknes

We continue to the Imperial City of Meknes, the “Versailles of Morocco.” We stop to admire Bab Mansour, arguably the most beautiful gate in North Africa, and the massive royal granaries and stables of Sultan Moulay Ismail.

Arrival in Fes

By late afternoon, we reach Fes, the spiritual and cultural epicenter of the Kingdom.

Day 4: Fes – The Living Medieval Heart

With a local historian, dive into the world’s largest and oldest living medieval city. Navigate the 9,000 winding alleys of the UNESCO-listed Medina, where the air is thick with the scent of spices and the sound of copper-beaters.

Historical Icons

Visit the Al-Qarawiyyin University (founded in 859 AD), the intricate Bou Inania Madrasa, and the iconic Chouara Tanneries, where leather is still dyed in stone vats using methods unchanged since the Middle Ages.

Explore the colorful souks, from silk-weaving workshops to the potter’s quarter, before visiting the Jewish Mellah and the golden gates of the Royal Palace.

Day 5: Fes – Ifrane – Merzouga Sahara

The Middle Atlas Odyssey

We begin a long but spectacular journey south. We stop in Ifrane, known as “Moroccan Switzerland” for its alpine architecture and lakes, followed by the ancient Cedar Forests of Azrou, where you can feed the indigenous Barbary macaques.

Ziz Valley Landscapes

After lunch in Midelt, we descend through the dramatic Ziz Gorges, following a palm-fringed river valley that leads us to the edge of the desert.

Saharan Sunset

Arriving in Merzouga, you’ll trade your vehicle for a camel caravan. Trek into the golden Erg Chebbi dunes as the sun dips below the horizon, painting the sand in hues of violet and orange.

Day 6: Merzouga Desert Immersion – Nomads, Gnawa & Deep Dunes

A Day in the Deep Sahara

Today is dedicated to exploring the soul of the Merzouga region. We go beyond the tourist trails to visit a Nomad family living in traditional tents. Over a glass of mint tea, you will learn about their ancient lifestyle and the resilience required to thrive in the harsh desert environment.

The Gnawa Spirit

We visit the village of Khamlia, home to descendants of formerly enslaved people from sub-Saharan Africa. Here, you will be “captivated by the rhythm” of Gnawa music—a hypnotic, spiritual performance of drums and metal castanets that is a cornerstone of Saharan heritage.

Ancient Mines & Oases

Our 4×4 excursion continues to the abandoned Mefiss mines, where lead and zinc were once extracted. We also walk through a verdant desert oasis, witnessing the “miraculous” traditional irrigation systems that allow life to bloom in the sand.

Evening Solitude

You return to your luxury camp for another evening under the world’s clearest skies. Enjoy a traditional Berber “Pizza” (Madfouna) for lunch and a starlit dinner as the desert silence settles around you.

Day 7: Merzouga – Rissani – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley

We depart the dunes and head to Rissani, the foundation of the current Alaouite Dynasty. We take a stroll through its authentic souk, one of the most traditional in the south, famous for its donkey parking and vibrant spice trade.

Nature’s Cathedral

We continue to the Todra Gorge, a spectacular limestone canyon with vertical walls reaching 300 meters. You will walk along the riverbed, feeling the “power of the water” that carved this passage through the mountains over millennia.

The Dades Trail

As the sun begins to soften, we drive through the Dades Valley, often called the “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs.” You will see the curious “Monkey Fingers” rock formations—a geological wonder—and watch the light change over the red cliffs.

Day 8: Dades – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – Marrakech

The Rose Valley

We stop in Ouarzazate to visit the Atlas Film Studios. This city has served as the backdrop for legends like Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and Kingdom of Heaven.

Ait Ben Haddou

Crossing the Atlas
