The Middle Atlas Ascent
Your 3-day Saharan odyssey begins with a prompt 8:00 AM pickup from your Riad or Hotel in Fes. We depart the city and head south, climbing into the cool, fresh air of the Middle Atlas Mountains.
Alpine Charm & Ancient Forests
Our first stop is Ifrane, the “Switzerland of Morocco,” famous for its sloped roofs and European atmosphere. We then continue to the Cedar Forests of Azrou, where you can admire the majestic trees and spend time with the local Barbary Macaques in their natural habitat.
The High Atlas Crossing
After a lunch stop in the mountain town of Midelt, we traverse the dramatic Tizi n’Talghamt Pass (the “She-Camel Pass”). As we descend through the rugged Ziz Gorges, you will witness the landscape transform into the arid, palm-fringed beauty of the pre-Sahara.
Arrival in Merzouga
By late afternoon, we reach Merzouga, the gateway to the dunes. You will have free time to relax at your hotel, enjoy the swimming pool, and take in your first views of the massive Erg Chebbi dunes before a peaceful overnight stay.
4×4 Desert Discovery
After a refreshing breakfast at the hotel, we set out on a thrilling 4×4 excursion through the dunes. We will visit the “Black Desert” (Hamada) and share a traditional cup of tea with a Nomadic family, learning about their ancient lifestyle and how they thrive in the Saharan environment.
The Rhythms of Khamlia
Our journey continues to the village of Khamlia, where you will experience a soul-stirring performance by the Gnawa people. Their hypnotic music and spiritual songs offer a deep cultural connection to the heritage of sub-Saharan Africa.
Majestic Camel Trek
In the late afternoon, trade your vehicle for a camel caravan. You will trek deep into the golden Erg Chebbi dunes as the sun begins to set, casting long shadows and vibrant colors across the sand—a moment of pure Saharan magic.
Luxury Under the Stars
Arrive at our exclusive desert camp, where your luxury tent is appointed with comfortable beds and private en-suite showers and toilets. Following a gourmet Moroccan dinner, gather around the fire for a traditional Berber drum session. The night concludes with the ultimate experience: stargazing under one of the clearest, most brilliant night skies on Earth.
A Saharan Dawn
We rise with the first light of day to witness a spectacular sunrise over the golden dunes. After this spiritual moment, you will return to the village of Merzouga on camelback (or via 4×4) to enjoy a fresh breakfast and prepare for our return journey.
The Markets of Rissani
We depart the desert and visit the historic Rissani Souk, once a major stop for ancient sub-Saharan caravans. It remains one of the most traditional and authentic markets in the region.
Volcanic Gorges & The High Atlas
Our route takes us north through the breathtaking Ziz Gorges, where the landscape is defined by dramatic volcanic rock formations and deep palm-filled canyons. We then cross the Tizi n’Talghamt Pass to reach the “Apple Capital” of Midelt.
Berber Hospitality in Zaida
Upon reaching the Zaida area, we stop for a delicious barbecue lunch and a refreshing cup of traditional mint tea. This region offers a true taste of the middle highlands’ hospitality.
Final Forest & Alpine Stops
We continue our drive through the Middle Atlas, stopping once more at the Cedar Forest for a final encounter with the Barbary macaques (apes). Our last break is in the “French village” of Ifrane, perfect for a quick photo or a drink in its alpine-inspired center.
Return to the Spiritual Capital
We arrive back in Fes by early evening, where your driver will drop you at your Riad or Hotel, marking the conclusion of your unforgettable 3-day Saharan odyssey.

The 3-day tour is the “gold standard” for the Sahara. On a 2-day trip, you spend most of your time in the car. On the 3-day trip, you get a full day (Day 2) to truly experience the desert culture—visiting nomad families, listening to Gnawa music, and exploring the dunes—without the rush of a long drive.
This specific itinerary is a round-trip that begins and ends in Fes. However, because we offer private tours, we can easily modify it to end in Marrakech or Ouarzazate for a small additional fee. Please let us know your travel plans when booking!
The drive is approximately 7–8 hours. While it is a long journey, it is broken up into several segments with stops in the “Switzerland of Morocco” (Ifrane), the Cedar Forest to see wild monkeys, and the panoramic Ziz Valley.
Day 2 is packed with authentic experiences! We take a 4×4 excursion to:
Visit nomadic families in their traditional tents to learn about their lifestyle.
Listen to Gnawa music in the village of Khamlia.
Explore the M’fiss lead mines and the lush desert oases.
In the afternoon, you will begin your camel trek into the heart of the Erg Chebbi dunes for sunset.
Yes! Most of our luxury and standard camps provide sandboards for guests. You can climb the dunes near the camp and glide down—it is a highlight for many of our travelers.
Absolutely. If you prefer not to ride a camel, we provide a 4×4 transfer to the camp at no extra cost. You can still enjoy the sunset and the desert stars without the trek.
We recommend:
A small overnight bag. Leave your large suitcases in the 4×4 and take only essentials to the camp.
Layers. Even in summer, the desert can get cool at night. In winter, a heavy coat is necessary.
Protection. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a scarf (your driver can show you how to tie a traditional turban to protect from wind and sun).
If you book our Luxury Desert Camp option, you will have a private, en-suite bathroom with a hot shower and flush toilet inside your tent. In our Standard Camp, bathroom facilities are shared.
No. All entrance fees to historical sites, museums, and monuments mentioned in the itinerary are included in your tour price. You won’t need to pay at the door.
We provide door-to-door service. Our driver will pick you up directly from your Riad or Hotel. If your Riad is in a car-free zone of the Medina, we will arrange a meeting point at the closest gate and meet you there personally.
