Your 3-Day Marrakech to Merzouga Desert Itinerary

Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Ait Ben Haddou – Dades Valley

Morning: Departure from Marrakech

Your private driver will collect you from your accommodation in Marrakech, usually between 7:30 AM and 8:30 AM.

If your riad is located inside the pedestrian-only medina, pickup will be arranged at the nearest accessible meeting point.

Travel south through the High Atlas Mountains, crossing the Tizi n’Tichka Pass at approximately 2,260 meters (7,415 feet) above sea level.

The mountain road passes traditional villages, valleys and viewpoints. Short stops can be arranged for photographs and refreshments.

Midday: Explore Ait Ben Haddou

Continue to Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its traditional fortified earthen architecture.

You’ll have time to walk through the historic village, see its narrow streets and climb toward viewpoints overlooking the surrounding landscape.

Ait Ben Haddou has also been used as a filming location for productions including Gladiator and Game of Thrones.

After sightseeing, stop for lunch at a local restaurant. Lunch is not included in the advertised half-board arrangement.

Afternoon: Ouarzazate, Skoura and the Valley of Roses

Continue toward Ouarzazate, a city associated with Morocco’s film industry.

Travel along the Route of a Thousand Kasbahs, passing the Skoura Oasis and traditional settlements.

The journey continues through Kelaat M’Gouna, an area known for rose cultivation and products made from rose petals.

Depending on the time available, your driver can stop at viewpoints along the route.

Evening: Arrival in the Dades Valley

Reach the Dades Valley and check into your hotel or traditional riad.

The area is known for its mountain scenery and distinctive rock formations, including the formations commonly called Monkey Fingers.

Enjoy dinner at your accommodation.

Overnight: Hotel or riad in Dades Valley.

Meals included: Dinner.

Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert

Morning: Todra Gorge

After breakfast, depart for Todra Gorge, near Tinghir.

You’ll have time to walk through the accessible section of the canyon, where limestone cliffs rise above the road and riverbed.

The main sightseeing area can be explored on foot, although comfortable shoes are recommended due to uneven surfaces.

Midday: Travel Through Southern Morocco

Continue toward the desert through Tinejdad and Erfoud.

Erfoud is known for fossil-rich stone and workshops producing decorative objects from fossil-bearing rock. Depending on the schedule, you may have time for a short visit.

Stop for lunch before continuing toward Merzouga.

Afternoon: Arrival in Merzouga

Reach Merzouga, a village on the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes.

Here you’ll meet the camel handlers and prepare for the ride to the desert camp.

The Erg Chebbi area is known for its large sand dunes, which offer a different landscape from the smaller dunes and rocky desert around Zagora.

Camel Ride and Sunset

Ride a camel into the dunes toward your camp. The itinerary includes an opportunity to watch the sunset, subject to weather conditions and arrival time.

If you prefer not to ride a camel, a 4×4 transfer can be arranged instead.

The exact length and route of the camel ride should be confirmed before departure.

Evening: Dinner and Overnight at the Desert Camp

After arriving at the camp, settle into your private tent.

The advertised luxury desert accommodation includes proper beds and en-suite bathroom facilities.

Dinner is served at the camp. Depending on the arrangements, the evening may include traditional music around a campfire and time outdoors.

When the sky is clear, you’ll have an opportunity to see the stars away from the lights of larger towns.

Overnight: Merzouga Sahara desert camp.

Meals included: Breakfast and dinner.

Day 3: Merzouga – Rissani – Draa Valley – Marrakech

Early Morning: Sunrise Over Erg Chebbi

If you wish, wake early to watch the sunrise over the dunes.

After breakfast, leave the desert camp and return to the vehicle meeting point by camel or 4×4, according to your arrangements.

Morning: Rissani and Alnif

Begin the return journey toward Marrakech, passing through Rissani.

Rissani is a traditional trading town known for its markets and local agricultural products. A short stop may be possible, although market activity depends on the day of the week and available time.

Continue toward Alnif, an area known for its geological formations and fossil-bearing rocks.

Midday: Draa Valley

Travel through the Draa Valley, passing palm groves, villages and traditional earthen buildings.

The route continues toward Agdz, where the valley connects with the mountain roads leading north.

Stops for lunch, rest and photographs will depend on the day’s schedule.

Afternoon and Evening: Return to Marrakech

Continue through Ouarzazate and cross the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass.

The return journey from Merzouga to Marrakech requires approximately 9–10 hours of driving under normal conditions, excluding longer meal and sightseeing stops.

Arrival in Marrakech is generally expected in the evening. The exact time depends on traffic, mountain road conditions and the duration of stops.

Your driver will drop you off at your accommodation or the nearest accessible location.

Meals included: Breakfast.

What to Expect from a 3-Day Merzouga Desert Tour

A three-day itinerary is one of the shortest ways to travel from Marrakech to the large Erg Chebbi dunes, stay overnight at a desert camp and return to Marrakech.

The route includes two different overnight locations and several sightseeing stops along the way.

However, it is not a leisurely desert holiday. You will spend a significant amount of time traveling, and there is no full day reserved for exploring the Merzouga region.

If you want to spend more time in the desert, visit Khamlia or take a longer 4×4 excursion around Merzouga, consider the 4-day tour instead.

If you have only two days available, the Zagora tour is another option, but it visits a different desert landscape with much smaller dunes.

Accommodation During Your Tour

The tour includes two nights of accommodation.

Night 1: Dades Valley Hotel or Riad

Stay in a hotel or traditional Moroccan riad in the Dades Valley.

Dinner and breakfast are included in the half-board arrangement.

The exact accommodation and room category depend on the confirmed booking.

Night 2: Merzouga Desert Camp

Spend the second night in a desert camp near the Erg Chebbi dunes.

The advertised luxury accommodation includes a private tent with a proper bed and an en-suite bathroom.

Dinner and breakfast are included.

Before booking, you can request the camp’s name, photographs of the tents and confirmation of facilities such as hot water, electricity and private bathroom arrangements.
